Lullay, lullay, my little tiny child, Bye bye, lully, lullay. Lullay, lulllay, my tiny child, Bye bye, lully, lullay. O sisters too, what may we do For to preserve this day? This poor youngling for whom we sing, "Bye bye, lully, lullay"? Herod the king, in his raging, Chargèd he hath this day; His men of might in his own sight All young children to slay. Then woe is me, poor child, for thee And ever mourn and may For thy parting not say nor sing, "Bye bye, lully, lullay," "Bye bye, lully, lullay," "Bye bye, lully, lullay."

about

This carol is about the death of innocent children. In recent months and years, hundreds of Indigenous children's graves have been 'discovered' at the sites of former residential schools across Canada. Recording this old carol felt like a poignant and solemn way to honour the lives lost to Canada's colonial project, and to spend a few moments in reflection.

Created by Ben Caplan, Graham Scott and Adam Saikaley, this treatment of Coventry Carol sets the melody amid a kinetic electroacoustic sound collage of live-performed and digitally processed period instruments (organ; harp; recorder; dulcimer) to create an immersive, gestural sonic poem. Recording took place in Graham’s living room in Brooklyn, NY and in Ben’s dressing room on tour in the Netherlands.

This work is offered for sale as a standalone digital-only EP, or bundled together with the Instrumental version and a 12x12” archival pigment print of Jamie Kronick’s artwork for the project: either the original photograph or a digital manipulation—each available from a hand-numbered, signed edition of 8.

All proceeds from this project will be donated to the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund in support of their work building cultural understanding and creating a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

about

Ben Caplan Halifax, Nova Scotia

A charismatic charmer and a smasher of pianos. A madman and an earnest poet. A strummer of delicate chords and a lover of bent and broken melodies. His rough and textured tones cut through crowded halls; an enormous voice, roaring louder than raucous crowds. Once he has your attention, Caplan can croon smoother than a glass of single malt whisky, pouring beauty into a harsh world. ... more
